COLD SPRING WINS SENIOR BB TOURNAMENT

HANSKA - Close games featured the Second Annual Pre-Season tournament for the Minnesota Senior Men’s Amateur Baseball Association Saturday, May 24, at Hanlin Field, Hanska. Cold Spring’s Silver Springers won the tournament by beating the Menagha Relics 2-1. Menagha entered the championship game with a 6-4 win over the Freeport Gray Sox.
Hanska’s Bullheads, defending state champions, split two games, losing to Cold Spring 2-1, reaching Dan Hinkemeyer for only seven hits, five of them by starting and losing pitcher Kevin Hulke and teammate Dan Erdman. Tom Steinbach and Al Felber also collected hits in the contest. Newcomer Kyle Messner worked three scoreless innings to finish the game for Hanska.
In a rematch of last year's state tournament semi-final game, Hanska hitters scored six first inning runs in a 10-3 win over Freeport. The first four four runs came on a double by John Giefer, singles from Todd Olson, Steinbach, Erdman, and Brian Sieve. Bruce Jacobs capped off the inning with a bases loaded double. The final three in the fourth inning resulted as walks to Messner and Olson, Geifer’s second double, and Steinbach’s sacrifice fly. Giefer collected three of the12 Bullhead hits. Pitchers Myron Seidl and Steinbach scattered five Gray Sox hits.
The Bullheads begin league play this week at Vesili Friday night, then host the Edina Braemar Bees at 1:00 PM Sunday at Hanlin Field in another MSMABA River Valley Conference game.
