New Ulm to host 20-20 state amateur tournament

ST. CLOUD --- The 2020 Minnesota amateur baseball tournament will return to New Ulm in 2020 with the awarding of the event a meeting here Saturday.

The Minnesota Baseball Association's board of directors designated Delano-Maple Lake as the site of the 2019 tournament. Other bids by Faribault-Owatonna and Glencoe-Brownton were considered.

New Ulm's bidding delegation included Bob Skillings, president of the New Ulm Baseball Association; board members LeRoy Flor and Jim Bastian: Jim Bartels, KNUJ; Tom Schmitz, city of New Ulm Parks and Recreation department supervisor, and Herb Schaper, New Ulm baseball historian.

New Ulm previously hosted two tournaments in the 1940's, 1953 and 1958 and 1990.
Originally New Ulm had sought the 2019 event but in consideration of possible conflicts with proposed renovation of Johnson Park, the 20-20 tournament was very acceptable according to Skillings who headed up the bid for New Ulm Baseball Association.

This will be the 96th consecutive tournament since it originated in St. Paul.
