Shakopee's potent batting attack banged out another 21 hits in a 14-1 win over Dassel-Cokato Sunday in the championship game of the VFW District 2 tournament at Johnson Park in New Ulm. The 21 hits was the highest of the tournament and surpassed Shakopee's 15-hit barrage over Sleepy Eye in the first round.

The champions broke open a 1-1 game in the fourth inning with a six-run outburst and then added one in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh. Meantime left-hander Sheldon Miks limited Dassel to 5. Dassel was the 2011 Minnesota U14 Babe Ruth champions with most of the players moving up to this 16U squad.

Shakopee won all four of its District 2 games while Dassel battled its way through the loser's bracket to set up Sunday's game.

Dassel made it to the finals with a pair of back-to-back wins, the first at 4 p.m. 4-2 over Hastings and then a 7 p.m. 6-5 triumph over New Ulm, a team it had lost to previously by 10 runs. Dassel won its last three games after losing to New Ulm and had won for the first time when it beat Hutchinson #2.

Shakopee went into the finals with a three-game winning streak over Sleepy Eye, Hastings and then New Ulm.

Shakopee vaulted over Sleepy Eye 20-9, Hastings stopped Fairmont 7-3, Dassel nipped Hutchinson II 4-2 and New Ulm Gold won a 1-0 thriller over Farmington in opening games in the 2nd district VFW baseball tournament Thursday.

Hastings grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning and stayed ahead of Fairmont the rest of the way for a 7-3 triumph to move on and dropped Fairmont into the loser's bracket of the double elimination tournament. Cole Emler had a pair of hits for Fairmont while Hastings spread its 11 throughout the seven innings.

New Ulm scored a first inning run and made it stand up despite a bases loaded last inning and a runner cut down at the plate to preserve the shutout and the win.

Shakopee held a 13-0 lead going into the last of the fourth when Sleepy Eye rallied for nine runs but then gave up another seven to Shakopee in the home half of the inning. Line score will be reported in the tournament tracker (attachment below) when complete.

Friday's activity include Shakopee beating Hastings 5-2, New Ulm winning over Dassel, Fairmont eliminating Sleepy Eye, and Hutchinson #2 topping Farmington. Dassel shut down Fairmont 8-0 while Hastings sent Hutchinson #2 home 8-2.
