Updated: MVL Coach Morgan ties city boy's basketball coaching record

When Minnesota Valley Lutheran topped Cedar Mountain/Comfrey Cougars Friday night it earned coach Craig Morgan his 299th coaching victory in New Ulm (all at MVL) and tied a city boy's basketball record which has stood for 38 years.

The last coach to get a 299th was the late Harold Kaiser who retired after the 1978 season. All his wins were also in New Ulm and at Luther on the MLC campus and which had a number of name changes in school title during that streak.

Previously Morgan passed Jim Bauer who recorded 274 wins at MVL. He has since increased is coaching wins over 500 counting both MVL and is presently coaching at Lakeside Lutheran in Wisconsin.

Although all girl's records have not yet been authenticated, it is believed Dave Biedenbender at MVL and Mary Dangerud at Cathedral have both passed 300. Dangerud counted some wins at Kimbal and Totino Grace, both Minnesota high school. Biedenbender reached 316 two years ago and has since accepted a parochial school calling to Texas. He coached from2000 to 2015. Gayle Bauer, coaching 1981-1993, accumulated 207 wins.

The boy's records have been accumulated by high school sports historian Ronald Reinhart of New Ulm who is also a board member of New Ulm Sports Central. Sports Central director Herb Schaper directed the compilation for historical purposes and now is refining the records digitally for the NUSC archives.

More detailed information on boy's and girl's coaching participation will be enumerated as Morgan becomes the first New Ulm boy's coach to reach 300th career coaching wins in New Ulm.

We are unaware of any New Ulm alumni who has accumulated 300 high school wins.
