Mankato wins Substate 2 16-13 over Jordan

Sat. July 22, 2017 - Top seed Mankato outscored Jordan 16-13 to win the Substate 2 tournament and qualify for the state American Legion tournament. Mankato had advanced to the final game with a unique bye in the championship day. Upstart Jordan had come from third place and reached the championship game Sunday with a 4-0 victory over New Ulm Gold in Saturday's first game.

Jordan goes against Mankato National, the top seed, for the title and a trip to the state Legion tournament.

Fri., July 21, 2017 - New Ulm Gold defeated Mankato's American team 7-4 Friday afternoon to advance to Saturday's championship Sub Section 2 tournament as weather and the steady advance of lower rated American and New Ulm Blue may have altered a final schedule. With games set for today, three teams remain with one loss.

Mankato National receives the automatic bye under the three-teams left scenario while New Ulm plays Jordan again. The winner than will play Mankato. The #3 seed Jordan played all the way back through the loser's bracket with a 6-1 win over #1 seed Mankato National Friday night. It had lost to New Ulm 3-1 in the second round.

A pairings change necessitated by the unusual results. When possible, teams were not to face each other again during the championship run until no other options existed according to the original schedule. And if three teams somehow remained (all with one loss apparently), the highest seed would get a bye in for the final championship day.

A Mankato win will send it to the state. Either New Ulm or Jordan need to win two games to go on. Game schedules are to be announced.
