New Ulm claimed a share of sports history today (June 7) when two of its high school teams finished first and third in the state girl's softball tournament finals. As the schedule played out, New Ulm Cathedral romped to a third place finish in Class A and immediately thereafter on the same diamond, New Ulm High School took it all with a extra-inning win in Class AA.

New Ulm High School captured the Class AA softball championship with an extra inning 9-5 win over St. Anthony Village. It is the first Class AA Title for New Ulm, who's highest previous finish was runners-up in 1997.
New Ulm scored four runs in the top of the first on three hits and an error as well as leaving the bases loaded.
St. Anthony Village got on the board with a three run third inning. Aiyana Ledwein had a big two-run RBI double in the inning to draw within one at 4-3. St. Anthony Village tied the game in the fourth on an error.
In the bottom of the fifth St. Anthony took the lead thanks to a lead off double and then a single.
With two outs in the top of the seventh New Ulm's Katie Frost singled home the tying run. St. Anthony stranded a runner on second to end the inning.
In the extra frame New Ulm loaded the bases with one out. After a passed ball gave New Ulm a 6-5 lead, Brittany Hoffman hit a ball that bounced off the left fielder's glove and then over the fence for a home run.
St. Anthony loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning but failed to score as New Ulm held on for the 9-5 win.
Kelsy Kannegiesser got the win going 7 2/3 innings allowing just two earned runs.
St. Anthony Village ends the year with a 24-4 record and a runners-up finish.

New Ulm Cathedral used a four run first inning to erase a 1-0 deceit and then scored two in the second to take command against New Life Academy to win the Class A Third Place game 9-2.
Six different members of New Ulm Cathedral drove in a run in the win and Ali Brey went all seven innings allowing just two runs while striking out seven to get the win.
New Life Academy committed three errors in the loss as the four time Class A State Champions finish the year 17-9.
