JR. LEGION ONLY WINNER IN VFW SUB-DISTRICT TOURNAMENTS

New Ulm Jr. Legion rolled over St. James 23-0 Thursday as the only New Ulm winner in first round play of the Second district's sub-district VFW tournament competition. Also in the Hanska Southwest Sub District played at Hanska, Fairmont edged New Ulm VFW Blue 1-0. Dassel spanked New Ulm Gold 12-1 at the Hutchinson Northwest sub-district. Elimination and winner bracket play continues Friday and Saturday.

Jr. Legion batted 14 players in scoring 10 runs in the first inning in its win over St. James. It then added six more in the second, three in the second and four more in the fourth. Dan Blackstad pitched the four innings, giving up four hits and striking out eight. Shane Traulich batted in four runs with a double and single. Kaleb Jutumen and Jason Shaul each had three RBI's with Jason Shaul going 2-2.

New Ulm Blue was surprisingly tough in losing only 1-0 to Fairmont as Jory Dove lost a heart breaker to Fairmont's Jon Eillis who retired the first 13 batters. Dove granted only four hits, three in the first two innings. Fairmont scored the only run in the top of the fourth. Ellis was working on a perfect game until the fifth when Dan Reinke walked to end the perfect game and Shellum singled to ended the no-hitter.

Dassel-Cokato was aided by Gold errors and defensive miscues early and took a 4-0 first inning lead. A single run in the second and six in the third added to the scoring.
