JR LEGION GOES TO DISTRICT AS CHAMPION With 20-6 BREEZE

HANSKA - It was for the championship of the Southwest District VFW tournament but there were some strange things in New Ulm's 20-6 win over Fairmont. After losing to Fairmont 3-2 early in the tournament, the Jr. Legion scored two straight wins coming out of the elimination bracket.

Fairmont pitchers hit four New Ulm batters and walked another 10. New Ulm hurlers walked only one man twice but they, too, hit four batters. Eight hit batsmen isn't your normal thing for a nine inning game, let alone seven. New Ulm had 15 hits, nine by the first four batters. Lead off batter Adam Loose and No. Two hitter Aaron Pfaff scored nine runs between them. Aaron romped home five times. One came after he was hit with a line shot leading off in foul territory at third. It was a pretty good shot, but not as wicked as the one Zach Hoffmann crushed in the sixth inning as a tower drive over the left field fence. That followed his double to deep center in the fifth.

Jr. Legion got 14 players into the game 12 of the 14 scored at least one run.

Hoffmann's three hits drove in four runs but catcher/pitcher Jason Shaul with 2-5 t batted in six runs, three coming in the first inning in two at bats as New Ulm sent up 14 batters in jumping to a 9-0 lead. Four scored after two out. Legion had nine hits in that inning and finished with 15.
