MANKATO ONE GAME FROM STATE VFW TOURNAMENT

SLEEPY EYE - Mankato moved to one win from qualifying for the state VFW tournament at St. Cloud and plays New Ulm today at 1 p.m. A win put the Royals into the state.

Mankato edged New Ulm 8-6 here Saturday after New Ulm won an elimination bracket game over Egan 17-6. Eagan had stayed alive by beating Sleepy Eye 15-7. If New Ullm wins the 1 p.m. game, a follow-up contest wll be necessary.

Mankato and New Ulm Jr. Legion stayed unbeaten in Friday's District 2 VFW tournament at Sleepy Eye and Essig. New Ulm stopped Eagan 10-0 in five innings and Mankato won over Dassel 12-2 in six. They face each other at noon Friday (July 25) at Sleepy Eye.

Meanwhile in the elimination bracket, Eagan stayed alive with a 3-2 win over Fairmont and Sleepy Eye disposed of Dassel 10-2 to advance toits Friday 3 p.m. game with Eagan. Winner of the Sleepy Eye-Eagan game will play the lsoer of New Ulm-Mankato at 6 p.m. Saturday to set up Sunday's championship game (or games if necessary).

Winner's Bracket- Mankato 12, Dassel 2 (6 innings) New Ulm Jr. Legion 13, Eagan 0 (5 innings) Mankato and New Ulm will play noon Saturday in championship bracket.

Elimination Bracket - Fairmont 6, South St. Paul 2; Sleepy Eye 9, St. Peter 3. Eagan 3, Fairmont 2. Sleepy Eye 10, Dassel 2. Sleepy Eye plays Eagan at 3 p.m. Saturday.
