New Ulm Sports Central - Preserving and Sharing New Ulm Area Sports History

After a gallant comeback from a first game loss, New Ulm Gold was taken out of the American Legion Minnesota baseball tournament Sunday with a 5-3 loss to Eden Prairie, another metro-area team destined to be in the final lineup of contenders.

However, according to the game-tracker on the Legion website, Eden Prairie will be playing for third place while other teams contend for the championship and runner-up position. Third place, however, would be a prize if either of the two top teams were not able to advance to the regions in North Dakota.

Earlier Gold had out-slugging Lakefield North 12-10 as it continued to battle its way through the elimination bracket in the State American Legion baseball tournament Sunday.

It was the Gold's second win of the day.

Now it faces another daunting task when it goes against Eden Prairie at 4 p.m. Eden Prairie also won 12-11 Saturday afternoon to eliminate Tri-City Red.

New Ulm Gold Saturday morning fashioned a 7-1 win over Minneapolis Giantvalley to eliminate that team.Ed. Note: The Minneapolis team is spelled as above in the state Legion website.

Next game for Gold will be Sunday at 10 a.m. as the tournament field narrows with more elimination and championship bracket games Saturday.

After the first game of the tournament, Gold had fallen into the elimination bracket where every game is a "must win" situation. It since defeated East View and now
Giantvalley.

New Ulm Gold lost and won in first round games of the 2012 Minnesota State American Legion baseball tournament in Chanhassen/Chaska this weekend.

In its first game, Gold lost 9-4 to Tri-City Red and then mustered and 8-5 win over Eastview to eliminate that team from the tournament. Eastview had lost to a metro district place Hopkins team 5-4 in its first game.
