NEW ULM, MANKATO REACH JR. LEGION FINALS SUNDAY

Rivals Mankato and New Ulm Jr. Legion reached the semi-finals of the Junior Upper Midwest Classic and will play Sunday morning to advance to the championship game. Both won their third and fourth round pool games Saturday to advance.
New Ulm scored late to stop Luverne 8-0 to post a 4-0 record in Pool A and meets the runner-up Pool B team, Omaha Creighton , at 9 a.m. Sunday at Johnson Park. Mankato as the 4-0 champion of Pool B, takes on the Tonka Mudhens at noon. The two survivors meet at 2:30.
The New Ulm team, running its season record to 17-1 gave up only two runs in the four preliminary games but was hampered by pitching control problems in the early innings against Luverne. Mankato also won a pair of games for the four-game preliminary gave up only six runs. Creighton moved up Saturday and passed New Ulm VFW Gold which had a shot at the championship round before losing to Mankato 7-2. Tonka Mudhens lost its first game 3-0 in the seventh inning in the tournament opener Thursday against New Ulm.
