Vernon "Ader" Wieland, 90 of New Ulm died Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at the New Ulm Medical Center.
Funeral service was May 16, at Oakwood United Methodist Church with burial in the New Ulm City Cemetery.
He was one of the last surviving members of the New Ulm 1941 state American Legion Baseball championship team and continued as a player for New Ulm and area teams and then concluded as a long-time umpire.
Ader is survived by his wife Darleen Wieland of New Ulm; daughters, Jane Wieland of New Ulm, Brenda (Paul) Berg of New Ulm; sons, Perry (Donna) Wieland of Willmar, Brad (Kristy Paulson) Wieland of New Ulm; daughter-in-law, Sue Wieland, Coon Rapids; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister, Laura (Harold) Richter of New Ulm; brother, James Wieland of New Ulm; and sister-in-law, JoAnn Wieland of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Robert "Bob" Wieland who passed in 2012; sisters, Florence Ginkel, Viola Rockvam, Vera Meredith, Alice Robinson, Hilda Breu; brothers, Willard, Norman, and Harold Wieland; sisters-in-law, Louise, Linda, and Bea Wieland; and brothers-in-law, Elmer Ginkel, Kenneth Rockvam, Robert Meredith, George Robinson, and Leonard Breu.
Vernon "Ader" L. Wieland was born January 23, 1925 in New Ulm to Fred and Ella (Meyer) Wieland. He was a 1944 graduate of the New Ulm Public High School. Ader was united in marriage to Darleen Schroeder on June 26, 1947 in New Ulm. The couple was blessed with five children whom together they raised in New Ulm. Early in life, Ader worked for the Schell's Brewery, the MN Valley Creamery, and the Farmer's Cooperative Creamery. Later in life he worked for Kraft Foods where he was employed for 32 years before his retirement in 1987. Ader had a variety of passions and hobbies in life, most involving his true love of sports. Ader played baseball for the New Ulm Millers, the Brewers, and the Courtland and Searles ball clubs.
He was a football official and a baseball umpire for over fifty years. Ader holds the honor of being inducted into both the New Ulm Baseball and Bowling Halls of Fame. He was a member of Turner Hall and the New Ulm Country Club.
Ader was also a very active member of Oakwood United Methodist Church in New Ulm where he was the church treasurer for thirty years, a trustee, a Council member, and a PPRC member. Ader was active in his community, his church, his career, and in sports.
