New Ulm Sports Central - Preserving and Sharing New Ulm Area Sports History

With seasons coming to a close, a push has begun at New Ulm Sports Central to standardize and complete its records for high school basketball at local schools. A particular goal was to get girls' basketball to its rightful place as an activity.

Sports historians Ron Reinhart and Red Wyczawski, members of the organization, are assisting in the multiple projects under NUSC's direction. Contributions have also been made by John Vetter and others.

Areas of concentration include the 1000-point listings, girl's basketball annual files for each of the three schools, season game results for all including the boys' teams, the summary of season's won-lost and the coaches involved, and the standardization of the basketball stats in our system. The type of stats and how they are presented makeup the standardization process.

The thousand point listing requires periodic auditing to ensure that the data that is being listed is fully documented by individual annual records. Listings may remove names if he records are not furnished. Digitizing also allows for the computing of additional stats for previous years although these may not have been kept in those years.

A researched suggestion format is being submitted to previous and former coaches for review. This format only to guide schools in the material they need to record. They may continue to use the formats provided by electronic systems.

The summary of seasons for BBB and GBB includes game-by-game results, stats, pictures, playoff results and special clippings.

The annual summary has won-lost, playoffs, highlights and coaching records for wins, games coached and championships won.

The project, expected to reach into the next season, is directed by administrator Herb Schaper with the assistance of MLC student John Hemmelman, the current history intern. They hope to have the majority of the work done before the beginning of the amateur baseball playoffs.
