SHAKOPEE - On the strength of good pitching, excellent defense, and some timely hitting, the Shakopee Chiefs overcame a three- run Hanska first inning to defeat the Bullheads 7-5 Sunday evening. It was Hanska's first loss in league play. Shakopee pitcher Brad VanBerger scattered just 6 more hits after giving three runs in the first. He got some help from his defense to hold the Bullheads to single runs in the fourth and seventh innings.
A seventh inning rally fell short for Hanska as a game-tying home run bid off the bat of Mike Marquardt was pulled in with a leaping grab off the fence by the Chiefs' center fielder at the 353-foot marker.
In Hanska's first inning, after a Kyle Messner lead-off base hit, Mike Marquardt, Dave Fauth, and Terry Steinbach singled ahead of a Tom Steinbach's one-out double to account for the three runs. Marquardt, Fauth, and Tom Steinbach led the offence with multi-hit games, and Fauth and Terry Steinbach each threw 3 innings for the Bullheads. Steinbach was the losing pitcher as Shakopee scored three to tie the game in the second inning, and four in the fourth.
