Tournament pairings released today have paired New Ulm Gold as the host team with the currently ranked No. 1 American Legion baseball team in Minnesota. The state poll of Legion teams released Tuesday put Apple Valley's 76'ers in the first place role with 10 of the 14 first place votes counted. In the poll New Ulm Gold dropped from 10th to 13th and Mankato National moved into the poll the first time, probably as a result of it's District 2 championship over Gold. Mankato will play Wayzata which climbed from 18 to 10th.
New Ulm Gold plays Apple Valley at 1 p.m. Thursday. In the opener at Mueller Park at 9:30 (No. 7) St. Paul Park, plays Fergus Falls. Second rated Hopkins meets Willmar at 10 a.m. at Johnson Park.
In other first round matchups by the ranked teams, Hamline Purple (3) meets (8) Grand Rapids at Essig, (4) Excelsior clashes with Academy Stars at Essig, (6) Rochester Patriots play Waite Park at Sleepy Eye, (7) St. Paul Park clashes with Fergus Falls at Johnson at 9:30 a.m. and (9) Eagan will play Buffalo at Sleepy Eye.
