HANSKA - The Hanska Bullheads downed the visiting Jordan Millers Sunday evening 5-1 to win the 10-team Blue Division of the MSMABA River Valley Conference with a 13-2 record. Second place St. Peter with three losses had been in the running.
Winning pitcher Terry Steinbach struck out eight and scattered six hits over six innings. Kyle Messner struck out the side in the seventh. Steinbach and Millers pitcher Troy Mahoney had a 0-0 pitcher's duel going until the bottom of the fourth when Mike Marquardt reached on an error. Bruce Jacobs ran for Marquardt who was injured on the play. Terry Steinbach then doubled off the batter's eye in center field sending Jacobs to third Tom Steinbach sent a pop-up down the left field line allowing Jacobs to score. Hanska added four runs in the fifth. Dean Brinkman led off with a walk. Two runs were plated on consecutive hits by Messner, John Giefer, Dave Fauth, and Jacobs. With the bases loaded, Terry Steinbach walked to force in a run and Tom Steinbach's second hit drove in the fifth run of the game. Messner, Giefer, Todd Olson, and Tom Steinbach each had two-hit games for the Bullheads. Jordan's center fielder Brian Schroeder drove a Steinbach pitch over the left field fence in the sxith to account for the only Millers score of the evening.
The Bullheads' game with the Union Hill Pit-bulls as a exhibition Sunday Aug.16 at 3:00 p.m. , has been cancelled due for the need of a make-up game by the Pit-Bulls. Hanska now will get ready for the MSMABA state championship. The tournament will be held over the last 2 weekends of August in Jordan, Belle Plaine and Union Hill.
