LAMBERTON STUMBLES; HANSKA MOVES ON IN STATE

GAYLORD - Lamberton lost is first game of double elimination, but Hanska got timely defense and clutch pitching from Stark draftee Josh Hadley to move on in the state amateur baseball tournament here Sunday afternoon. Lamberton trailed 2-0 against Winsted before giving up 12 runs in the eighth and ninth to lose 14-1. Hanska came up with single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to edge past Blue Earth 3-1. Box scores and play-by-play are shown at the end of this post.

Hanska and Lamberton return to action Friday in the double elimination.

Hadley and Blue Earth's Aaron Wendt were locked in a scoreless duel for five innings as Hanska's robust team batting average of .351 in the tournament was beginning to look suspect. The Blue Earth Pirates had a runner on in each of four innings. One was caught stealing and another erased on a double play. Hanska's lone offense was a bunt single by Mikale Gustafson. Wendt struck out the side in the fifth before both teams scored in the sixth.

A single by the number nine hitter, stolen base and a 330-foot double by the lead off batsmen scored the lone run for Blue Earth, that with none out. Timely defense pulled Hanska out of jams in that inning as well as in the next thanks to a second runner caught stealing, a normal 6-4-3 double play, a double play on a misfired bunt and doubling up a runner at second when first baseman Micade Thorson snared a liner.

Hanska came back to tie it with a lead off single by Gustafson, stolen base, a 3-1 out at first to advance and a line shot ripped to right by Dustin Wilfahrt. A bunt single by Matt Suess started the run in the seventh. Then with two out, Hadley drove a double off the right-center wall to chase in the run. One more crossed in the eighth on a single by Eric Portner, sacrifice by Wilfhart and a ground single into left by Chris Peters.

Defense backed reliever Gary Wilfahrt (save) to retire the Pirates in order. Hoffmann made a back-to-home catch of a pop fly dropping into left. Third baseman Brady Mosenden bobbled a grounder, but barehanded it the air and got the runner at first. Matt Suess raced across right-center to snare the third out.

Lamberton was trailing only 2-0 going into the eighth but then gave up eight runs and four more in the ninth for it's 14-1 loss. Lamberton gave up 16 hits while Winsted held the Long Sox to six. Both teams had three errors. Searles drafee Matt Johnson had kept Lamberton in the gamefor seven innings before Winsted jumped on Ty Reiner who started the eighth for four runs, all earned and all without getting anyone out. Mike Anderson gave up another three while getting one out before J Wahl cleaned up the eighth. John Pistulka gave up four runs in the ninth.

Second baseman Isaac Jennigs and drafted catcher Andy Cook of Leavenworth each had two hits of Lamberton's six for the game.

Winsted joins Hanska as one of four teams still without a loss in the Class C portion of the tournament.
