EUREKA, Ill. – The MLC football team gained 486 yards of total offense, but didn’t have enough to stop Eureka as they lost 41-34 Saturday afternoon.

Eureka totaled 606 yards of offense for the game and overcame a 13-point deficit with nearly eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, taking the lead on a five-yard touchdown pass from Nick Lindsey to Wes Schmidgall with 14 seconds left to go in the game. The pass capped a five-play, 44-yard drive for Eureka that took just over a minute off the clock.

Offensively, the Knights showed strong balance as they rushed for 348 yards on 61 attempts and passed for 138 yards. Aaron Voss led the ground game with 179 yards on 37 carries, while Greg Holzhueter scored two rushing touchdowns and 126 yards on 11 carries. Andrew Becker also had a strong day, rushing 11 times for 48 yards and a score.

Holzhueter also had a strong day passing, completing nine passes for 138 yards and two scores, both of which went to Ryan Kolander, who also finished with 102 yards receiving on six catches.

Defensively, Luke Beilke led the Knights with 13 total tackles, while Matt Rothe and Chuqee Fletcher added eight. Rothe also added two tackles for loss and one sack. Defensive back Josh Schultz intercepted two passes from the MLC secondary to go along with two tackles and a pass break-up.

The Knights dropped to 1-2 on the season with the loss, while Eureka improved to 2-1 with the win.

The Knights will return to New Ulm for the first of three consecutive home contests when they host Trinity Bible College on Saturday, Sept. 26, for a kick-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
