MLC CLINCHES UMAC TITLE WITH BLOWOUT WIN

NEW ULM, Minn. – The MLC football team clinched the UMAC North championship in a 59-22 win over St.
Scholastica Saturday afternoon.
The Knights pounded the Saints from the start, scoring 46 points in the first half and holding the Saints without a
first down for the first 25 minutes of the game.
MLC scored on its first six possessions, and took control of the game for good with four second quarter
touchdowns, and capped each with a two-point conversion.
Ryan Kolander and Greg Holzhueter had things going in the first half, connecting seven times for 144 yards and
two touchdowns (a seven-yarder on the first drive to give MLC the lead, and then a 15-yarder to push the lead to
38-0). With his big day, Kolander moved into first place on the MLC single-season receiving yards list with 903
yards on 49 catches for the season, to go along with his touchdown catch record that he set last week, which he
pushed to 16 with his two scores Saturday.
Also reaching a statistical milestone was Aaron Voss, who ran for 103 yards and two scores on the day to give him
1,005 rushing yards for the season, matching his total from last season and making him the first player ever at MLC
to reach the 1,000 yard mark twice in a career.
While Voss had a productive day, it was Andrew Becker who led the Knights in rushing, going for 129 yards on 12
carries and scoring two touchdowns, including a 40-yard scamper in the third quarter to push the MLC lead to 53-8
at the time.
Holzhueter played into the third quarter and finished with 7-11 on the day for 144 yards and two scores and added
an eight-yard touchdown run. Caleb Dietrich also added a touchdown run in the second half.
While the offense put up the numbers, the defense held St. Scholastica down. Saints’ running back Chris Henagin
came into the game leading the UMAC in rushing yards and finished with 138 yards on 24 carries for the game, but
was held in check when the game was being decided. Henagin had just 23 yards rushing on seven carries in the first
half. As a team, the MLC defense held the Saints to just 20 yards of offense on 19 first half plays, allowed one first
down and also forced three turnovers.
The MLC defense was by Joe Lindloff’s seven tackles, while Ben Reichel shut down St. Scholastica’s leading
receiver Mike VanMassenhove all day and added four tackles and one sack. Richard Starr came off the bench with
six tackles, two for loss, and one sack, while Chuqee Fletcher and Matt Rothe added five tackles.
MLC finished the season 7-3 overall and 4-0 in UMAC play with the win, while St. Scholastica dropped to 4-6
overall and 2-2 in league action with the loss.
