MANKATO -- One of the story book sports stories of 2010 continued Wednesday night as Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School beat Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights 6-3 in the second of two championship games at Wolverton game. The Knightsstopped Minnesota Valley Lutheran 2-1 here in the first game of the finals of the Section 2A baseball tournament to force a second game early.
In the title game MVL took a 1--0 lead into the fourth but Lake Crystal scored once to tie it and then a fair in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. However, a five-run sixth inning by the Chargers propelled to team to the state tournament and with only a 13-13 season record. The Cinderella run included wins over the state's second seeded and fourth seeded teams. Lake Crystal finished 22-3. New Ulm Cathedral, one of its victims, finished 20-1.
Keith Bessemer (5-3) pitched the final game win while Nate Miller (3-3) took the loss in the first game.
In the first game, after MVL loaded the bases with one out but failed to score. Lake Crystal got both of its runs in the sixth. MVL came back with one and had two on with two out in the seventh before losing to the state's fourth-ranked class A baseball team.
