MVL FALLS TWICE IN STATE 6-0 AND 3-2

JORDAN - Minnesota Valley Lutheran fell in the first round of the Minnesota State High School League baseball tournament here Thursday, dropping a 6-0 decision to Eden Valley-Watkins and then lost in the consolation game 3-2 in eight innings to Adrian.

MVL carried a 2-1 lead into the last of the seventh after a 1 1/2-hour rain delay and had two outs before a walk and double tied up the game. The Chargers threatened in the eighth and put two on with one out only to hit into an inning double play.

Again in the eighth relief pitcher Nate Miller got two out but then gave up a double and infield single before being charged with a balk to let in the winning run. It was MVL's fourth straight state tournament loss in two appearances.

MVL got a seventh inning single from sophomore Dan Reinke to break spoil a no-hitter in the first game.

The Chargers gave up three runs in the third and another trio in the top of the seventh.

The Eagles of Eden Valley-Watkins (25-0) earned a semifinal berth with a 6-0 defeat of the Chargers of Minnesota Valley Lutheran (13-14). Senior Tyler Geislinger went the distance, earning a one-hitter while striking out eight and walking only two. Senior Dan Sargent drove in two runs on a double and a triple for the Eagles. Junior Grant Warren was also credited with two RBI. The Chargers held the Eagles scoreless through the first two innings, but Eden Valley-Watkins exploded for three runs each in both the top of the third and the top of the seventh. The Eagles finished with 10 hits and Geislinger’s no-hitter was spoiled by sophomore Dan Reinke’s two-out, bottom of the seventh single.
