New Ulm Sports Central - Preserving and Sharing New Ulm Area Sports History

ST. JAMES --- New Ulm Jr. Legion Sunday scored a 4-0 win over Fairmont to capture the title of the Southwest District, VFW playoffs for District 2. (Includes District, Sub-Dist brackets). Fairmont with it's runner-up finish also advances to the District tournament coming up in New Ulm starting Thursday July 22. New Ulm Gold also made it into the tournament.

New Ulm won all four of its games including beating Fairmont twice. Fairmont came back through the elimination bracket with a win over Mapleton and then topped Blue Earth for the right to get a second shot at New Ulm.

New Ulm opens the tournament at 10 a.m. against Shakopee, the runner-up from the Southeast sub-section. Fairmont is paired with the winner from that sub-section, Mankato. Other first round games put Hutchinson against Hastings and New Ulm Gold against Rosemount. Losers play each other as the tournament resumes Friday. A district bracket will be posted below when completed.

Mankato came through the Southeast sub-District by beating runner-up Shakopee twice. New Ulm Blue lost both its games, 11-6 to Hutchinson 2 and 4-2 to St. Peter.

New Ulm Gold came back through the elimination game to force Hutchinson into a second championship game. Hutchinson's #1 team won that extra playoff 5-2 as both qualified for the district tournament.

Rosemount comes in as the Northeast sub-district champion and Hastings will be the second place team.
