MANKATO -- Mankato got two wins Friday in the elimination bracket to return to the championship round of the Second District American Legion baseball tournament at Mankato. (See attached tournament bracket)
New Ulm Gold had moved into the championship series of the District 2 Legion tournament with a 9-4 win over No. 1 seeded Mankato Thursday night. That caused Mankato National to play back through the elimination bracket which it did with a 8-1 win over Fairmont. Fairmont had to beat Sleepy Eye 9-5 to set up that game. With only one team qualifying for the state tournament, Mankato now must win two games out of a possible two from Gold Saturday to get the trip.
Thursday found New Ulm Blue being eliminated despite holding Fairmont to a pair of runs in a 2-0 contest in what could be considered a moral victory for the Blue. Sleepy Eye stayed alive by eliminating Worthington 9-8.
Kyle E. Fischer pitched the Mankato win, limiting hard-hitting Nationals to eight hits, striking out 12. He did hit four batters which could very well be a one-game, one-pitcher record. Schaul and Kevin Larson hit home runs for Gold.
Earlier the Mankato Nationals toppled Worthington 13-0 while Gold stopped Fairmont 8-1. Worthington advanced by beating New Ulm Blue 7-4 while Fairmont got a 15-9 win over Sleepy Eye in the opening round.
