Earlier Saturday afternoon, Calvin Lehn, a left-hander, scattered five hits and struck out seven in the first four innings to lead the Rosemount 40 a 4-3 over New Ulm Gold in an elimination survival game. That game settled in the first inning when Rosemount's first three players scored runs.

The eight-team field was pared to four, three of them undefeated, in the District 2 VFW baseball tournament Friday.

Friday night's 7 p.m. games were some hummers, especially for New Ulm Gold which is the only district second place team still in the running. Gold Friday twice scored the winning run with a suicide squeeze play.
Friday night it came in the last of the ninth with the bases loaded with the bunt laid down by a hitter who missed the play moments earlier. Line scores and details will be found in the Game-by-Game Tracker which is directly linked.

New Ulm Junior Legion (2-0) chalked up the first 10-run shortened game with a 13-1 win over Hutchinson while Shakopee (1-1) edged Hastings (0-2) 3-2 in the first elimination game. Mankato held on to squeak by Rosemount 8-7, sending Rosemount to the elimination bracket. New Ulm Gold squeezed in the winning run last inning to eliminate Fairmont 6-5. Two more 7 p.m. contests will close out Friday's tournament action at New Ulm's two baseball parks. All games got completed before lightning started in advance of advertised threatening weather for Friday evening. Forecast showers didn't materialize during the day.

New Ulm Jr. Legion's 3-1 win over Shakopee had opened District 2 VFW tournament baseball play on a dreary day at Johnson Park in New Ulm in Thursday morning's opening contest. Although well drained, the grass was still wet from an early morning rain. Tournament bracket is attached below.

As the skies lightened up, Hutchinson jumped off to a 5-2 lead and ended up with a 6-4 win. Hastings scored twice with a seventh inning rally. And as the temps hit the low 80's and the sky was blue and sunny, Mankato also scored two runs in the seventh inning, with two out, and edged Fairmont 3-2.

Rosemount completed the day with a beautiful evening win over New Ulm Gold 7-3 as all sub-district champions triumphed in the first round of District play against runner-ups from other districts.

Rosemount had a 5-0 lead after two and 7-0 after four before New Ulm got its runs one at a time in the last three innings.

It is a work in progress but the Second District VFW Tournament is being scrapbooked with photos, write-ups and brackets. Click on the attachment to get to the scrapbook which will include Friday games in the updated Saturday version. More details on the Game Tracker above in bold face type.
