WILLMAR- New Ulm scored three runs in top of second and two in the third to take 5-2 lead over Sobieski in today's state tournament game at Willmar. Sobieski scores two runs in eighth and ninth before New Ulm wins 5-4 to advance to second round.
Kyle E. Fischer was relieved by Andy Cook after walking the first batter in the ninth. The runner scored while Cook retired the side.
The Brewer's last state tournament appearance was 2003, losing to New London-Spicer while getting only four hits. Corey and Schaefer plus Christ Peters were members of that team as was Jamie Hoffmann, now in AAA baseball with Albuquerque, NM. The 2003 team had a 22-11 record.

In Class B, the Mankato Twins gave up their first two runs in the playoffs but barely edged Cold Spring 3-2 in the opening game for that division. The game was at Bird Island.

Dane Allen singled in the doubling Tony Konicek to score the first run of the game for Mankato. Cold Spring tied the game 1-1 on a Mankato error. Craig Fritz knocked in a run to make it 2-1 Mankato. Derrek Heying hit a solo home run to again tie the score 2-2. Extra Innings! In the bottom of the 12th, Steve Helget walked, Chase Brown blooped a hit to center that the short stop and centerfielder got tangled up on and the runners ended up on second and third. Ben Kaus was intentionally walked and Corey LaPlant singled over a drawn in outfield.
