Heading into the final six games of pool play, the last two unbeaten teams squared off in a 3 p.m. game today at Essig. Creighton and Cold Spring showed 3-0 records in Pool B where it appeared only Luverne had a shot at being one of the two teams to come out of that pool for Sunday's semi-finals.
Previously unbeaten Hutchinson and Tonka Mudhenss in Pool A lost their first games and were joined at 2-1 records by New Ulm Junior Legion and Maple Grove. In final games Mankato plays Tonka and New Ulm Legion meets Hutchinson with some final pairings to possibly be decided by fewest runs allowed.
Hutchinson scored a 6-3 win over Worthington and 14-12 over Maple Grove while Cold Spring beat Luverne 7-1 and Osseo 6-3. Creighton topped Sleepy Eye 5-2 in the first game at Essig according to a write-up in New Ulm Journal.
Closest game of the tournament was the finale at Johnson Park with New Ulm Jr. Legion squeaking past Mankato 1-0. It earlier had lost to defending tournament champion Tonka Mudhens 4-0.
Semi-finals Sunday at 9 a.m. and noon pit pool winners vs pool runners-up with the championship game at 2:30 and a second game if necessary to determine the winner will follow after the 2:30 game.
