EGAN, FAIRMONT AND HUTCHINSON GET THURSDAY WINS

SLEEPY EYE --- Host team Sleepy Eye and nearby New Ulm were among the losers in the District 2 VFW baseball tournament starting here Thursday. Friday's games of the double elimination are listed in the Scoreboard above.

In a pair of close ones, New Ulm Gold rallied to it's game with Chaska before giving up the winning run in the last of the seventh. Fairmont survived with an eight-inning 3-2 win over Shakopee and Hutchinson took down Inver Grove Heights 7-3 while in the day's opener, Sleepy Eye lost 8-0 to a robust hitting Egan team.

New Ulm tied up its game with Chaska with a seventh inning run only to have Chaska score the winning tally in the last half of the inning. New Ulm made four errors. Winning run scored when pitcher Rinnan singled off the fence. Reliever Gieseke took over in the fifth and was the loser.

Hutchinson broke open for five runs in the fourth in a game filled with seven errors. Noga clubbed a two-run homer and Peterson a triple for Hutchinson. Nielsen got the win with help from Kern in the fifth.

Sleepy Eye got only two hits off Egan's Kunik while his teammates were slugging out lots of extra base hits in the opening game. He fanned eight.

The top three hitters got eight of the team's 10 hits, six of the blows going for extra bases.

The winners led 2-0 after three but scored a trio of runs in both the fourth and sixth innings. Fielder had a field day with two singles a triple, home run and four runs batted in. Loen had a single and double, Higgins two doubles and Olstad added another home run.

Shakopee held a 2-1 lead before Fairmont rallied to tie the score in the last of the seventh and then won it with two out on a walk off home run in the eighth. Ruen did the honors. Cherpich, who relieved Holm in the seventh, gets the win.

Cherpich, Ellis and Noel had doubles for the winner. Turcott and Graph did likewise for Shakopee.

Two more first run games remained to be played Thursday.
