As the field narrowed in the District 2 VFW tournament, defending champion New Ulm Jr. Legion went to Stark to score a nifty 3-2 win over Fairmont and remain in the running. Three games Saturday will narrow the championship series to two teams for Sunday.
In earlier games Friday afternoon Chaska moved past Hutchinson 6-3 and New Ulm took Inver Grove Heights 7-3. Shakopee lost to Hutchinson 6-1 at Stark.
Chase Meyer pitched New Ulm's win as Jimmie Holstein batted in a pair of runs.
In the Fairmont win Jr. Legion reeled off three 6-4-3 double plays (and Fairmont got one). Down 2-1, New Ulm scored two in the sixth to win it. In an unusual fielding day for this age group, Fairmont added a fourth 6-4-3 DP as hard hit shots quickly turned into rally killers.
Chaska jumped off with a five-run fist inning burst and added one in the second on the eeway to the6-3win over Hutchinson. Both teams got six hits. Wickstrom went the distance for Chaska.
Sleepy Eye dropped out and Egan beat Fairmont for it's second win in Friday morning games at the District 2 VFW tournament in Sleepy Eye and Stark.
A five-run burst in the fifth inning carried Shakopee to it's second tournament win, a 7-6 triumph over Sleepy Eye. At the time Sleepy Eye was holding a 6-2 lead. Anderson had 12 srike-outs in the pitching win although he gave up eight hits. Bush had a double for the winners.
For Sleepy Eye who out-hit the winners 8-5, Mickelson was three for four including a double. Neid doubled and Kopatek had a three-run homer. Anderson doubled for the winners.
Fairmont scored four times in the third to take a 5-0 lead. In the inning there were three hits but three walks and hit batsman did the damage even with three me left on base. Matt Fiedler went the distance with 10 strike-outs. Cole Peterson was 3-2-2 and Josh Noll one for two with two runs batted in. Jay Ruen was 2 for 3 for Fairmont.
