FAIRMONT - The last time Luke Schmit faced Blue Earth Area's Carter Hansen, the New Ulm senior narrowly lost by a 9-5 decision.

Schmit more than made up for that loss on Saturday at the South Central Conference wrestling tournament, defeating Hansen in the final to place first at160 pounds.

Schmit and Hansen again wrestled a close match, which necessitated an overtime period after the score was tied 5-5 at the end of regulation. Schmit won the overtime period 2-0 after earning a takedown with 32 second left to end up with a 7-5 decision.

New Ulm junior Luke Cihak placed second at 120 pounds to join Schmit as the only two Eagles to place in the top-three in their weight class.

The Eagles received a fourth-place finish from Austin Brandes (132 pounds) and fifth-place finishes from Ryan Wacker (106), Riley Shelgren (145) and Cody Stark (152).

Placing sixth for New Ulm were Sam Hoppe (138), Cole Wilfahrt (170), Lorenzo Hernandez (195) and Braxton Greenwaldt (220).

In other area team action at the tournament, St. James excelled with six wrestlers winning their weight classes.

At 113, the Saints' Ruben Bermudez finished first after winning the final by an 8-2 decision against St. Peter's Chris Pettis. Richy Soto won at 120 for the Saints by defeating Cihak by a 15-7 major decision in the final.

Giovanni Alvarado won for St. James at 145 pounds after pinning Fairmont/Martin County West's Joe Weber in the final, the Saints' Esteban Zeleya pinned St. Peter's Ashton Bartlett in the 170-pound final, St. James junior Devin Wolle pinned F/MCW's Jeff Brickner to win at 182 and Victor Torres won for the Saints at heavyweight with a 6-4 decision in the final against BEA's Martin Granados.

Also placing in the top-three for St. James were Cody Hanson (second at 106), Isaac Carreon (second at 126), Taylor Berg (third at 132), Kody Curry (third at 138) and Zack Gleiter (third at 152).

New Ulm will next wrestle in the Section 2AA team tournament, which begins Thursday. The Saints will wrestle in the Section 4A team tournament, which also begins Thursday.
