ST. CLOUD --- Three New Ulm High School graduates are figured to play dominant roles for the 2013 St. Cloud University Huskies baseball team and may also on hand for a yet-to-be confirmed appearance in New Ulm during the spring season.
Involved are twins Kyle and Garrett Fischer and graduate Zach Hoffmann. New Ulm’s baseball presence in St. Cloud is enhanced with the Pfaff brothers (Aaron and Drew) at St. John’s at nearby Collegeville. Prospects of the event have not been announced.
The Fischers have already proven themselves as starters for the Husky program which has set school achievement records for the past four season and is coming off a 48-14 year as runners-u in the NSIC regular season, post-season tournament and Central Plains regional. The season opener is Feb. 8-10 at Corpus Christi, Texas.
Kyle enters his red-shirt junior year as a starting pitcher after impressive season last year when he was a Daktronics All-Central Region 2nd Team member, Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association Central Region 2nd Team member, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association 2nd Team member, and All-NSIC First Team member. He made 11 starts and 16 compiling and 8-3 record and 2.21 earned run average.
He led the team with six complete games and tied as the team leader with three saves. In 77.1 innings, he stuck out 64 and allowed an opposition batting average of only .242. Kyle posted seven scoreless appearances, had five or more strikeouts in eight games, and had only one start go less than five innings.
His brother Garrett is scheduled for first base and outfield duty after playing 59 games and made 52 starts in right field during a breakout sophomore season. Garrett finished the season with a team-high .407 batting average (24th in the nation), had 21 multi-hit games from the two-spot in the Husky lineup.. Fischer led the team with 79 hits, three triples, and made just one error defensively.. He drove in 42 runs, had team-best 11-game hitting streak from April 14 to April 27, hitting in 28 of the last 30 games.
His impressive stats included 18 multi-hit games including four times in five games in the NCAA Central Region tournament. Fischer was 38th in the nation with 56 runs scored, 20th in the country with 20 doubles, and had four hits in three different games. He posted nine multi-RBI games, scored multiple runs in 16 games, including scoring four runs in three contests. Garrett had 111 total bases, a .572 slugging percentage and .458 on-base percentage. He drew nine walks, was second on the team with 19 stolen bases in 22 attempts.
Garrett was an All-NCAA Central Region Tournament Team member, Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association All-Central Region 2nd Team, NSIC All-Tournament, and All-NSIC 2nd Team member.
Zach Hoffmann a 2011 graduate of New Ulm High School enters his redshirt freshman year as a first baseman .. He was a three-time letter winner in baseball and hockey at New Ulm. In baseball, Hoffmann earned All-Conference, All-Section and All-State notice for New Ulm. Zach was a 2011 Lions' All-Star team pick and named New Ulm High School Athlete of the Year, EYL Player of the Week, baseball team MVP setting a set school record for season home runs with eight and helped New Ulm to MSHSL state hockey tournament . Zach served as a team captain and named team's Best Defenseman in hockey while gaining All-Confernece honors.
