Mankato Royals win Jr. Classic over New Ulm VFW Gold 15-11

Mankato breezed to an 14-4 lead heading for a 10-run ending but New Ulm scored four in the sixth and three more in the seventh to make it interesting. There were 33 hits in the game, 19 by the Royals who earlier had an 18-hit game.

New Ulm VFW Gold topped Hutchinson 4-2 and Mankato Royals nipped Hutchinson 1-0 to set up the finals of the Junior Upper Midwest baseball tournament underway at New Ulm.

Three of four Classic finalists pretty close neighbors

An all-Minnesota championship Sunday is in the works for the last day of the Junior Upper Midwest baseball classic. And three of the four teams are virtually neighbors.

At 9 a.m. Pool A winner New Ulm Gold VFW goes against Pool B runner-up Hutchinson and at noon Mankato as Pool B plays the Excelsior Tonka Mudhens who were runners-up in Pool B. The two winners play for the title at 2:30 p.m. to culminate 27 games of youth baseball at New Ulm's Johnson and Mueller Parks and Essig.

Both New Ulm Gold and Mankato won all four preliminary games to achieve the final round.

As the Jr. Upper Midwest Classic moved into Saturday morning and early afternoon games, Sleepy Eye dropped from the undefeated ranks with a 1-0 loss to Maple Grove which won its first game. Meanwhile New Ulm VFW Gold beat Sioux Falls 12-2 and Mankato edged Hutchinson 14-13 to keep their records intact at 3-0.

Six more games remain late Saturday afternoon and early evening to determine the four teams who will move into Sunday's championship semi-finals.

Five Teams 2-0 after THURSDAY AND FRIDAY first round games

Five of the starting field of 12 teams remained undefeated in pool play in the first round (Thursday and Friday) of the Junior Upper Midwest Classic sponsored by the New Ulm Post 132 American Legion. Five teams likewise are win-less in two starts. (See attachment below)

Three teams in Pool B with perfect records are Mankato, Hutchinson and Sleepy Eye while New Ulm VFW Gold and Osseo have won a pair of games for Pool A's best records.

One team will suffer its first loss as soon as 9:30 a.m. at Essig when Mankato meets Hutchinson. Other games continue at both Johnson and Mueller parks in New Ulm Saturday to select the four teams to advance to Sunday's championship round.

Sleepy Eye will play Maple Grove (0-2) at 10 a.m. at Mueller, New Ulm takes on Sioux Falls (1-1) at 1 p.m. at Johnson, and Osseo is challenged by the Tonka Mudhens (1-1) at 12:30 at Mueller.
