New Ulm edges Worthington for Sub-State 2 title

A sacrifice fly in the last of the ninth broke a 4-all tie and sent New Ulm Gold back to the Minnesota State American Legion baseball championship series as the first sub-State Division 1 tournament concluded in a cool weather week-end series at New Ulm.

Worthington had fought through the loser's bracket after losing to Sleepy Eye 3-2 Friday.

New Ulm won games from Woodbury, Mankato National (twice) and Sleepy Eye to reach the finals and got a good pitching performance from Jordan Guggisberg Sunday afternoon. However, it trailed 4-1 until coming up with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth. After four scoreless innings by both teams it was last-of-the-ninth sacrifice fly by Jamie Gieseke bringing in the winning run.

Gold will meet Richfield in Edina Friday in the state tournament's first round.

SATURDAY JULY 27

Worthington, a team which has never won an old version District 2 tournament became the first team to qualify for championship Sunday in the new Sub-State 2 playoffs winding down at Johnson Park in New Ulm.

It took a 4-3 win over Sleepy Eye to come through the loser's bracket. Sleepy Eye lost two games Saturday to be eliminated.

Mankato National held a short 2-0 lead but then gave up four runs in the same fourth inning and that's all the scoring as New Ulm took the game 4-2to advance to the finals with a perfect record. Had Mankato won, all three teams would have had one loss entering a unique final day.

Worthington and New Ulm meet at noon with a second game, if necessary scheduled a half hour after completion.

New Ulm will be seeking its third straight title and fourth in the last six years and sixth in the last nine.

The new teams in the line-up bowed out early. Woodbury was beaten by Fairmont and by New Ulm and St. Peter couldn't come up with the players to compete.

Against Sleepy Eye, Worthington took a 3-0 lead before a three-run fourth tied up the game. It stayed that way until the top of the 10th when the victors pushed across the winning run. It out-hit sleepy Eye 11-5.

Host New Ulm Gold capitalized on five errors to score a 10-0 win over Sleepy Eye in the winner's bracket semi-finals Saturday afternoon.

The first loss of the tournament sent Sleepy Eye in the loser's bracket semis against Worthington.

Nick Dewanz pitched the win over Sleepy Eye, granting only two hits and limited scoring opportunities for Sleepy Eye.

FRIDAY JULY 26 DAY 2

Games Friday whittled the field to the remaining four teams in the Sub-State 2 American Legion baseball tournament in New Ulm.

Sleepy Eye and New Ulm American Legion teams moved into the semi-finals with two wins while Worthington and Mankato Nationals battled back in the loser's bracket to round out Saturday's schedule. The tournament championship game or games will be Sunday with two survivors from Saturday vying for a trip to the state tournament.

New Ulm qualified with a 5-2 triumph over Mankato Nationals for its second win while earlier Sleepy Eye also won its second one-run game by beating Worthington (1-1) 3-2. In the day's other games, Fairmont (1-1) eliminated Woodbury (0-2_ 7-4 to stay alive and Mankato American (also 1-1) hung on with a forfeit win over St. Peter. St. Peter (0-2) forfeited its two games to be eliminated.

Woodbury and St. Peter were teams assigned to the former District 2 field this year in a revamped state-wide play-down meant to ensure that more Metropolitan area teams qualified for the state.

Activity continues Friday evening in the eight-team tournament with a pair of games in the loser's bracket.

THURSDAY JULY 25 OPENING GAMES

New Ulm Gold, Sleepy Eye, and Fairmont won first round games in the new 2013 sub State 2 American Legion.
baseball playoffs Thursday in New Ulm. Worthington also got a W due to an unusual forfeit by St. Peter, one of the new teams assigned to the region.

Gold edged the other newcomer, Woodbury, with a 3-2 triumph after Sleepy Eye had topped Mankato American 2-1 and Mankato Nationals won over Fairmont 9- 4 in earlier games.
