1959 Team Remembers a Great Year - Donates to NUSC

Almost the full roster of the New Ulm High School 1959 baseball team recollected the outstanding season they had with a mixture of sophomores and seniors.

They met at Turner Hall and concluded the day of remembering with dinner, two digital history presentations and an auction of memorabilia. Items were contributed so the auction proceeds of over $100 were contributed to New Ulm Sports Central to assist in the preservation and sharing of sports history such as that which this team wrote.

At the time the team set school record in wins (15), runs scored, an 11-game winning streak and other high-water marks for what turned out to be New Ulm High School's 24th team. None of the records were recorded when they were achieved a half century ago.

Pitcher Ken Cordes produced an iMovie on the team and Herb Schaper showed a Power Point on the success of the team including individual school records (at the time) for people like Wenzel Wiesner, Nils Iverson, Dave Silcox and Dennis Sperl. Some of those lasted many years thereafter. Historian Carl Wyczawski and Jim Senske, who started coaching in the early 1960's, also attended and participated.

The team rode the ll-game win streak into the state tournament where it lost to champion Minneapolis Washburn 4-1 and shared the third place trophy after rain prevented playing of the final game.
