New Ulm HALL OF FAME Member
Scott Backer
Infielder
Selected 1992
Lifetime Baseball Batting Stats Page
A hitting record attained by few
other players has made Scott Backer
one of the youngest players to ever be selected to the New Ulm Amateur
Baseball hall of Fame.
Scott was eligible for only
three years when he was selected to the HOF, but his .368 lifetime
batting
average made his selection an easy one.
That batting average (301-813) is the seventh best in
New Ulm's first 50 years of baseball. Backer is also sixth in hits, and
he is one of
only six players to get 300 or more hits in a career. He had 31 triples,
second highest, and was 10th in homers, sixth in total bases
and 10th in slugging percentage.
Backer hit over .300 in eight of
his 10
seasons and had a slugging average over .500 in five, topped by a .709
mark in 1973.
Backer managed the Brewers in 1976
and played with state tournament teams in 1971 and 1972. He was also a
member of the VFW state champions in 1966, and he served as an
assistant when the Legion went to Yakima in 1978.
After compiling a .347 average at
NUHS and a .360 average with the Legion, he was a four-year regular at the
University of Minnesota-Morris.
Career highlights included five hits
against Brownton in 1971 and a two-homer game against Essig in 1975.
