New Ulm HALL OF FAME Member
Andrew (Andy) Bastian
Non-Player (Manager)
Selected 1990
Instrumental in getting modern day baseball started in New Ulm in
1939, Bastian was on original board of directors until he resigned to
become the co-manager of Brewers in that year. He is generally
credited with
keeping baseball going in New Ulm during the war years, as he insisted
that teams continue to be fielded even if the players were on the old or young side.
He was always the hitter for infield practice by the Brewers.
After
co-managing for four years, Bastian served for seven years on the board of
directors from 1946 to 1952. Since he played baseball himself in the
1930's, his
involvement in New Ulm baseball spanned three decades.
Bastian co-managed the
first Brewer team to go to state (1939) and the 1941 State Class A
championship team. His 1942 team won the Western Minnesota League
championship.
