New Ulm HALL OF FAME Member
Harry Brand
Non-Player (Manager)
Selected 1990
Harry Brand was among the organizers of present day baseball in New
Ulm. He was
a charter member of first board of directors in 1939, but he resigned
soon after the organization was formed in order to become a co-manager of
the Brewers
with Andy Bastian.
Previously, Brand had managed New
Ulm's Hawks team in the Tomahawk League. Later, after he managed New Ulm
to two state championships, he finished his career as the manager of
the
Sleepy Eye team in the Western Minnesota League.
Brand co-managed the first Brewer team to
go to state in 1939 as well as the 1941 and 1943 State Class A
championship teams. In both years team beat the State Double A champions
for the mythical overall state title. The first New Ulm team in the
state tournament (1939) lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion.
Brand's teams won
the Western Minnesota
League titles in 1942 and 1943 and finished runner-up in 1939. His teams were 12-1 in state tournament competition,
and his career
winning percentage (145-59) was 71 percent.
