Ron Hauer was one of the great, locally-developed pitchers who
compiled a fine record before leaving the New Ulm community for his
life's vocation in Wisconsin. Hauer was a dedicated and
enthusiastic player, and he also filled-in as an outfielder as
needed when he was not on the mound.
Ron played
six years with the Brewers and one with the Millers and compiled
some strong pitching records along the way. He was especially noted for being a
consistent pitcher, and he pitched 404 innings in his career with a
career earned run average of 2.65. His career
included 27 wins in 58 appearances, 326 strikeouts, and only 134
walks.
In 1961
Hauer won 10 games, one of only 22 seasons in which an amateur pitcher has
broken into double figures in a season. Four of those wins came in
the playoffs, even though he lost to Springfield in the finals. He was
drafted for state tournament play that year by St. Peter. In that
1961 season, Ron worked 138 innings, which was a single-season total
that was surpassed by only 15
others in New Ulm's first 50 years of organized baseball.
Ron only had one season in which his ERA was above 3.00, and that came
against the tough competition
of the 1959 season in which he still posted a 4-1 record.
Previously,
Ron pitched for Dr. Martin Luther High School and College in New
Ulm, and he was 3-1 as a Legion pitcher in 1955-56. In those two
Legion seasons, he sported a
0.48 ERA in 29 innings and struck out 46 batters.
Hauer
currently resides in Hales Corners, WI. He is employed in sales work, after an
early stint as a parochial school teacher in the Wisconsin Synod.
