New Ulm HALL OF FAME Member
Ervin (Blackie) Jobe
Non-Player (Board Member)
Selected 1993
Service to New Ulm baseball as a player, a long-time umpire, and a long-time worker on the board
of directors are the credentials which prompted the nomination
of Ervin (Black) Jobe to the New Ulm Baseball hall of Fame in
the non-player category.
Erwin's baseball career started as a player, and his playing career spanned stints with Lafayette and Hanska as well as
in New Ulm
with the Brewers, mostly as a third baseman or shortstop.
Jobe played two full
seasons with the Brewers in 1959 and 1960, before he retired and started his umpiring
career. His Hanska team reached the state tournament when he played there in
1958.
Jobe spent 23 years umpiring
(1964-1986), and while most of it was in amateur baseball, but he
also umpired high school
and Legion games.
Erwin served 15 years on the New Ulm Baseball Association (NUBA) board of
directors, including four years as vice president. His NUBA term ran from
1973-1987, and during that time he was a representative or alternate for
New Ulm for 12 years in the Ara Wilson league.
In his umpiring career he worked five
state amateur baseball tournaments and served as the umpire host for
the 1990 state amateur tournament in New Ulm.
Jobe still helps out at state and
regional tournaments in New Ulm.
