A tough competitor on the mound, Bruce Johnson played ten years of amateur baseball for New Ulm. Eight of those years were with the Brewers and two were with the Kaiserhoff.

Bruce pitched 691.1 innings in his amateur career, which is a New Ulm record. He is third in all-time career wins with 48 and appeared in more than one hundred games as a pitcher. Johnson is also one of the top-ten pitchers for career strikeouts.

In a great pitching duels at Johnson Park, Bruce pitched a four-hitter in a 1-0 win over powerful hitting Stark and one of the state’s best pitchers, Vic Helget, in 1979.

Bruce pitched the Brewers into the region tournament with a win over Sleepy Eye in 1985. He won nine games in 1978 and eight more in 1979.

In his ten year career, Johnson had an ERA above 4.0 only once. He served as player manager for the 1982 Brewers. Combining high school, Legion, and amateur ball, Bruce pitched 907 innings and won 79 games.

When Bruce took the mound, nothing less than a top-notch effort was received.
