In just five
seasons, Carl Lemke made his mark on New Ulm baseball.
As a pitcher, he won
36 games and lost only 11, for a .76 career winning percentage. He was
always known for being a "master of
the curve ball" and as a player who had an outstanding work ethic and strong
competitor traits. He also earned the reputation of being a clutch pitcher in
the playoffs.
Lemke
is now returning to Minnesota to coach football at St. Croix Lutheran
High School,
after he coached football at Prairie du Chien and at Wisconsin Lutheran
High School
in Milwaukee.
Carl
was instrumental in the 1971 and 1972 playoff championships and in
the state
tournament play in both of those years, as he recorded a 10-1 record in
postseason play.
During
his career, Lemke pitched 10 complete or combined shutouts and
compiled
a career ERA of 1.96. He won 12 games in 1971 and struck out
494 batters while walking only 148 in 434 innings for his career.
Lemke
became involved in New Ulm baseball through his collegiate play at
Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm.
