Multi-talented Doug Palmer started his New Ulm baseball career
with the Kaiserhoff following his junior year in high school in
1978. A dedicated and hard-working player, he was an excellent
and
steady second baseman who compiled a .330 career batting
average.
In addition to his daily
steadiness, Palmer always stepped forward at playoff time to make a
big play in the field or with the bat. The sight of Palmer crossing
home plate with the winning run for the 1980 state title will always be
remembered by Kaiserhoff fans.
Palmer was
named to the all-tournament team, as he batted .416 and had five hits in
a game against Maple Lake. He also hit a key home run in the win over
Chaska.
In that
1980 season, Palmer also sported a 6-0 pitching record and was 11-3
over-all with a career ERA of 2.60.
Palmer hit
two triples 6-13-82 against Fairfax.
At
Cathedral, he hit .389 in 193 at-bats and finished .353 in 249 plate
appearances for the Legion. He was 17-1 pitching in high school
and 16-4 in Legion.
Palmer
played varsity baseball at Creighton University for four years and
reached the AA level with the Twins and AAA with Boston before being
released following the 1988 season. He now is on the staff of the
Doyle Baseball School in Florida.
