New Ulm HALL OF FAME Member
John (Hans) Richter
Non-Player (Board Member, Supporter)
Selected 1992
Baseball and it's need for money have gone together a long time
for John (Hans) Richter, one of three non-players nominated for
the fourth class of the New Ulm Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame.
Richter got
into baseball when the board was broke, and he had to make a deal to pay
off one of its creditors with money from the next year.
That
event started a 16-year term on the board, one of the longest in
board history, and involved Hans in practically all the phases of the game. He
served 10 years as a Tomahawk League representative or alternate and
also served two years as an Ara Wilson League representative.
Pounding
the payment for donations and season ticket sales was an annual
event for Richter, even after he got off the board.
Much of his
time was also spent in the concession stand and in stocking the beer coolers on game days.
Richter
served as president and vice president for 2 1/2 years each during
his time on the board from 1966-1978 and again from 1980-82.
