One of New Ulm's all-time greatest hitters is Neil Schmidt, and
he joins the
Hall of Fame ranks for amateur baseball in New Ulm.
His .350
career batting average is 11th on the all-time list, and
he never hit less than .300 in any of his five seasons.
Schmidt played
shortstop with the Millers for two seasons, took a couple of seasons off,
and then came back with three great years with the Brewers, including
a .411 season in 1970.
In 112
games he scored 97 runs and drove in 90.
Neil served
as a member of the New Ulm Baseball Association board and umpired
with Southwest from 1973-75.
Schmidt had two
five-hit games (vs. Gaylord in 1966 and vs. Searles in 1967) and played on
Tomahawk title teams in each of his five years. Four times his team
won the playoffs and went on to the state tournament. Neil's
highlight was the 1971 state tournament at Brownton, where he was named to
the all-state team.
Neil played his high school baseball at Franklin.
