Doyle Schneider began his career
with the New Ulm Millers in 1954 and then played with New
Ulm teams until 1976. At his Hall of Fame induction in
1990, Schneider's 22 years of service as an active player were the most ever for a
New Ulm player. Doyle played as an infielder, outfielder, and pitcher.
In
his career, Schneider
played in 427 games with a lifetime .287 average and a .413 slugging
average. He batted in 250 runs and had 28 homers. As a pitcher,
Schneider finished his career with a
21-12 record in 68 games with a 3.40 ERA.
Doyle was consistently one of best hitters on his team and hit .300 or better
in
11 different seasons, probably an all-time record. Schneider's best
seasons were in 1970, when he had a .393 BA and a .557 slugging in
18 games with the New Ulm Brewers, and in 1964, when he compiled a
.348 BA and a .523 slugging average with the Millers. As a pitcher,
his best seasons included a 6-1 record in 1955 and a 5-2 record with
a 1.99 ERA in 1969.
Schneider managed the
Brewers in 1975 and continued as a good fan of New Ulm baseball
after his playing career.
During his 22 seasons, Schneider was a member of
four state tournament teams, eight regular season champions and two
co-champions, and seven league playoff championship teams.
