Jim Senske's dedication to and his excellence in high school and
American Legion baseball coaching developed a solid foundation
for the amateur baseball program in New Ulm.
His 30
years of high school and 10 years of Legion coaching have provided a
winning tradition that has added strongly to the New Ulm amateur
program and has resulted in his nomination to the New Ulm Amateur
Hall of Fame.
He has
become Minnesota's high school coach win leader since moving up to
head coach at NUHS in 1964. He has also received several national
awards.
About 175
young men who played high school or Legion baseball under his
coaching have moved on to play in the amateur ranks of New Ulm. Others
have joined other area teams, and eight have advanced to professional baseball,
including one to the major leagues. Many of his players have
participated with distinction in college baseball.
In 1969,
after five years of having a single amateur team, the NUBA added a second
team, the Kaiserhoff. Jim and fellow NUHS assistant Jim Hakes came out
of a six-year retirement to participate as active players with the
team, thus adding experience and maturity to a team comprised of
high school and early college age young men and helping to get the
team started right.
Jim also
filled in one year when the New Ulm Miller team of the Bi-County
league lacked a coach at the start of the season. A number of those
players moved up quickly and later played for the Brewers.
Senske
played baseball in New Ulm for the Brewers from 1961-63 and for the
Kaiserhoff in 1969. He first came to New Ulm via St. Paul Wilson and Hamline.
