Richard Spelbrink was honored by being selected to
the inaugural group of inductees to the New Ulm Hall of Fame during Johnson Park's 50th Anniversary celebration in 1989.
Spelbrink, now retired, resides in Fort Myers, Fla. and Meerfield, MN.
Richard started playing with the Brewers in 1939 and had a brief pro
career. He was normally an infielder, but also pitched.
Spelbrink was a
member of the 1943 Class "A" and mythical state champions. He
co-managed the 1944 Brewers and was a member of the NUBA from
1953-1955.
Spelbrink holds the career records for an amateur player in
New Ulm in at-bats with 1,632, in triples with 35, and is tied
for the record with 83
doubles. As a pitcher, he had an ERA of 3.58 in 17 games.
Spelbrink played college baseball for Gustavus Adolphus College in
St. Peter and had a short stint in the Northern League in
professional baseball.
