Dennis Sperl played only five seasons of amateur baseball in New
Ulm, but he has been involved in local high school, Legion and
amateur baseball for almost 50 years.
Now, if he is not working in the concession stands, he is either doing some
other duties for the baseball association or just being a fan in
the stands.
As a high
school sophomore, Sperl played in his first amateur baseball game
with the Millers and had two hits and three RBIs. The next game, he
had three hits.
Sperl
played four years of both high school and Legion baseball plus five
years of amateur ball—four with the Millers and one with the
Brewers. He also managed the Brewers for part of the 1992
season.
His
contributions to amateur baseball after his playing days are
lengthy. He has been on the baseball board since 1989 and has been the charitable gambling manager (pull tab
fundraiser at local bars) since his first year on the board. The money raised through charitable
gambling has funded many of the improvements at Johnson Park and
Mueller Park over the years.
Sperl
also spends many hours as a board volunteer worker in the concession
stands or at board meetings. He also served on committees for the
1990 state tourney in New Ulm, and he has been active with numerous
Legion baseball committees.
Another
of his involvements was helping to start the indoor batting cage in
New Ulm.
When he
isn’t involved in New Ulm baseball, Sperl is checking on his
favorite pro team, the New York Yankees!
