Tim Steinbach set the bar high for his two brothers who
were to follow him in establishing one of the highest levels of
family achievement in New Ulm's amateur baseball program. His
credentials are awesome upon joining the Kaiserhoff in his
sophomore year in high school. Tim was dedicated to the game of
baseball and burned with an intense desire
to win.
With
this attitude, it is no surprise that Steinbach was a winner during
his nine years with the "K." In those nine seasons, the Kaiserhoff won four season
titles, three league playoff titles, two league playoff titles, two
league runner-ups which qualified the team for the regional, and two
state tournament appearances, one of these as state champions. He
also
appeared three times with Arlington as a drafted player, including as
part of a
state champion team.
Tim
extended his baseball career by umpiring games as early as 1980, and
he continues
to umpire with the Northwest Umpires Association. Steinbach also managed
the Kaiserhoff in 1982 and 1983.
Tim's player
stats depict an outstanding career as pitcher, infielder and
outfielder.
His .341
career batting average is surpassed by only 14 others in New Ulm's
first 50 years of baseball. When baseball stats were tabulated in
conjunction with the Johnson Park's 50th Anniversary celebration, he was fourth
overall in career home runs
(26) and runs-batted-in (192), fifth in doubles, seventh in total
bases and career slugging percentage (.572), and ninth in runs scored.
As a member
of the 1980 state champion Kaiserhoff team, he was selected to the all-tournament
team and also hit a key tow-run homerun.
Tim
compiled similar records at New Ulm High School (career batting
average
.370), with the American Legion (.327), and in college. He played
two years at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls and then two years
with his brothers Terry and Tom at the University of Minnesota.
The Hall of
Fame requires a player to be out of New Ulm baseball 10 years before
they are considered. Both Tim and Terry, also selected this year,
were selected on their first year of eligibility. A third brother,
Tom is New Ulm's all-time home-run leader.
