Page
Henry Welsch was one of only 39 New Ulm amateur players to hit over .300
for his career. (Over 1,200 players played baseball in New Ulm
during the first 50 years of baseball there.)
His lifetime .323 average placed him 24th on the all-time list.
Henry hit over
.300 in four of his seven seasons. His best was a .433 average in 29 games in 1947,
his first season in New Ulm.
In seven
seasons, Welsch played in 221 games and compiled a .450 career slugging average. His 43
career
doubles are seventh on all-time list, and he added 13 triples and 12 home
runs in his career. Both his career total bases total of 381 and his
career hits total are the 10th highest in New Ulm history.
Welsch often was involved in
summer playgrounds and co-coached 1950 Midget State Championship
team.
He also coached at Trinity High School in New Ulm.
Henry was the first New
Ulm player to hit two home runs in one inning, which he did during the third inning
of an August
10, 1947 game at Franklin. He also had eight runs-batted-in in that game and
shares the all-time with George Hayes for RBIs in a single game.
