Bob Wendland will always be remembered as an outstanding ball
player, a very hard worker with an excellent attitude, and a
player of various positions for both the Brewers and the Kaiserhoff.
Bob’s
outstanding contributions to New Ulm amateur baseball include his
long-time service of 11 years with the Brewers and one with the K.
He also managed the Brewers for 12 games in 1985.
Bob was
an outstanding pitcher for the Brewers, beginning in 1971. He
appeared in 109 games with the Brewers, tying him with Bruce Johnson
for the record number of appearances. That record was later broken by Tom
Steinbach. His pitching career included five seasons in which his ERA was
under 2.00, and he averaged almost a strike-out per inning in his career.
Wendland accomplished an extraordinary feat for a pitcher: for three seasons, Bob did not lose a
single game. For his career, Wendland won 35 games and lost 11 while striking out 421
hitters and
compiling a 2.56 ERA.
Bob was a
very dedicated player with a winning attitude.
